The thesis
Core thesis
NTN puts satellite connectivity into 3GPP mobile standards. SpaceX Starlink direct-to-cell (powering T-Mobile T-Satellite, commercial since July 2025), AST SpaceMobile and Lynk Global are leading. The promise: phone connectivity anywhere on earth, no dead zones. Capability has moved past emergency SOS – T-Satellite now carries messaging plus app data, with broadband-grade service tracking second-generation satellites. Transformative for rural coverage, maritime, and disaster response.
State of the art (2026)
NTN has crossed from demo to live service. SpaceX Starlink runs ~10,400 satellites and 12M+ subscribers, with 650+ direct-to-cell birds powering T-Mobile T-Satellite, commercial since July 2025 and now carrying app data beyond SMS. AST SpaceMobile launched BlueBirds 8-10 in June 2026, is targeting ~45 satellites by year-end, holds FCC Supplemental Coverage from Space authorisation and lists nearly 60 MNO partners covering 3B+ subscribers, though service is still beta with AT&T. 3GPP Release 19 froze in 2025-2026, adding store-and-forward IoT and regenerative-payload groundwork; Release 20 folds NTN into 5G-Advanced and early 6G. The open question is no longer feasibility but direct-to-cell unit economics at scale.
