low conviction concept6G research
6G is a standards-study theme, not an investment theme: 3GPP Release 20 studies run now, specs land in Release 21, and commercial launch stays ~2030 with AI-RAN the real battleground.

The thesis
State of the art (2026)
6G is in the standards study phase, not yet a product. 3GPP Release 20 6G studies began in mid-2025; normative specification work moves to Release 21 from roughly 2027, with first commercial launches still consensus-dated around 2030. The defining 2025-26 development is not an open-source insurgency but Nvidia going all-in on AI-RAN with incumbents: a $1B Nvidia investment in Nokia (October 2025) and the ARC-Pro accelerated compute platform, with Ericsson and T-Mobile demonstrating portable AI-RAN on Nvidia silicon in early 2026. Spectrum is being fought over at WRC-27 (agenda item 1.7: 7.125-8.4 GHz and 14.8-15.35 GHz). South Korea and Japan still target the earliest deployments; Huawei leads a parallel China track under sanctions.
Core thesis
6G promises terahertz/sub-THz frequencies, AI-native networking and integrated sensing. Samsung leads vision research; Ericsson promotes an AI-native intelligent fabric; Nokia Bell Labs works the fundamentals. The defining structural shift is AI-RAN: rather than open-sourcing 6G to displace incumbents, Nvidia has partnered with them, investing $1B in Nokia (October 2025) and pushing its ARC-Pro compute platform so 5G-Advanced networks can upgrade to 6G in software. First commercial services are still consensus-dated around 2030.
