Perovskite-silicon tandems are now in gigawatt-scale manufacturing in China and IP licensing across majors, but 25-year field stability, not lab efficiency, decides whether they displace silicon.

The thesis
Core thesis
Perovskite-silicon tandems hit 34.85% efficiency (LONGi record), vs 24% for commercial silicon. Henry Snaith (Oxford PV) pioneered the technology. China leads commercialisation — GCL and Trina targeting 2026-2027 commercial modules. The unsolved problem: perovskite degrades faster than silicon under real-world conditions. A 25-year warranty is table stakes for solar; perovskites aren't there yet.
State of the art (2026)
The lab race is won and the commercial race has started. LONGi holds the NREL-certified perovskite-silicon tandem record at 34.85% (2025), with a ~35% ESTI claim still uncertified. The decisive 2025-26 shift is manufacturing: GCL opened the first gigawatt-scale perovskite tandem line in Kunshan (June 2025) at 29.51% certified module efficiency, with mass production and first shipments due through 2026; UtmoLight is running a 1GW line. Oxford PV ships ~25% tandem modules and has licensed its IP to Trinasolar (China, 2025) and First Solar (US, Feb 2026), targeting full mass production in 2027 and a 20-year lifetime by 2028. Field-stability and 25-year bankability remain the unresolved gate to utility scale.
